barbados diaspora collaborative usa about us mission statement board of directors officers committees collaborative hospice donate contact us donors donations to the barbados hospice and palliative care initiative continue… read more... events and activities events and activities relating to the barbados hospice and palliative care initiative have… read more... sponsors & partners barbados diaspora collaborative needs sponsors and partners to turn our… read more... links links to relevant organizations: read more... what's new hospice construction preparations completed preliminary work for the hospice joint venture between the barbados association for cancer advocacy (baca barbados) and the living water community (lwc) -- both charitable barbados organizations -- is completed and the final step of selecting a construction firm is in process. barbadian companies and individuals have generously completed architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical elements largely pro bono. contributors included architect robert o'neal of design-collaborative, independent architect tyrone mapp (formerly of selby, rose & mapp), structural engineer philip sobers of consultant engineers partnership ltd., mechanical engineer jerry date and electrical engineer peter jackman, both of adeb consultants ltd., and quantity surveyor david guppy of anchor consultants inc. capital campaign fundraiser neysha soodeen and her team continue to do yeoman service and has garnered private sector financial support in barbados. fundraising is ongoing and will continue for the foreseeable future to complete construction and keep the facility on a strong footing. rose jackman, one of the founders of lwc and her team of in-house professionals, have provided excellent advice and the ministry of health has been supportive of this much-needed facility. barbados diaspora collaborative usa (bdc usa), inc. continues its fundraising efforts in the usa to support the initiative. bdc usa is a federal tax-exempt non-profit entity established in 2012 to seek external (us) funding for impactful projects targeting areas of need in barbados. the barbados cancer association (baca) usa is holding its 3rd annual fundraiser for the hospice on february 10 in new york. in addition, the canadian diaspora is holding its first hospice fundraiser on june 16 in toronto. efforts are underway to engage the uk diaspora. construction will commence the 1st quarter of 2018 and services should start the 1st quarter of 2019. this 14-bed hospice and palliative care facility will establish international standards for hospice care in barbados and will be an essential supplement to current, limited hospice care. bdc usa supports hospice with $50k contribution the barbados diaspora collaborative (bdc usa), inc. continues to support the establishment of a free-standing hospice & palliative care facility in barbados. recently, bdc usa voted to support the project in the amount of us$50,000 which is in the process of being transferred to the barbados association for cancer advocacy, the barbados charity that entered into a joint venture with the living water community (lwc) of st. david’s, christ church to build the hospice. lwc is a community based charitable organization with extensive experience in hospice management and the facility will be situated on their campus. architectural plans have been submitted to the barbados town and country planning office in barbados and approval is pending. neysha sooden has been appointed the capital campaign chair in barbados and is making strides in securing donations both monetary and in-kind. the timeline now calls for construction to start january 2017 with services to start in late 2017. bdc usa has a mandate to support projects arising in the diaspora that benefit barbados. this is bdc usa’s first project and while it will continue to support the initiative for the foreseeable future, it will be looking to help fund other barbadian projects in the years ahead. renderings of the barbados hospice above and here: baca’s valentine’s concert raises money for the hospice project february 2016 the barbados cancer association usa (baca), inc. held “an evening of love” concert & reception on saturday, february 6, 2016 at st. gabriel’s episcopal church in brooklyn, ny to raise funds for the barbados hospice & palliative care initiative. under the direction of steven legall, organist at st. mark’s church in brooklyn, the audience of more than 100 was treated to a two-hour concert featuring performances by pianist and organist neil walker; valmon dawson on the clarinet, accomplished mezzo-soprano grace hackett, soloists mijon zulu, natasha radix and tristan layne and the melodious baca combined voices choir. the ‘love’ concert, as it was aptly nicknamed, will be an annual event scheduled next for saturday, february 11, 2017. baca has been the driving force behind the hospice initiative. baca & lwc sign agreement to build a hospice the trustees of barbados association for cancer advocacy and living water community inc. (lwc) announced in june the signing of a joint venture agreement to construct and operate a standalone hospice and palliative care facility on the lwc compound at st. david’s, christ church in barbados. baca, lwc and other stakeholders recognize that the aging of the barbados population, the increase in chronic non-communicable diseases, limited hospice and palliative care options and the lack of such a facility on the island are factors that make a standalone hospice a desirable option. also noted, is that the barbados palliative care needs assessment project’s 2012 report recommended a standalone hospice be part of the palliative care offerings in barbados. baca and lwc have agreed that a 14-bed facility would fit the current needs of barbados. fundraising for the hospice is spearheaded by the barbados diaspora collaborative usa (bdc usa), a not-for-profit us organization in conjunction with domestic and international stakeholders. it is expected that approximately bds $4,000,000 will be needed to initiate and sustain the project in its initial stages. the ministry of health of barbados has lauded the efforts of these charities to fill this important void in the health care services in barbados and supports the call for philanthropy from members of civil society and the business communities locally, regionally and internationally. baca is the local arm of barbados cancer association usa (baca), inc. which is presently under the presidency of o’neall parris, md. over its 10-year history, baca has provided support for cancer-related services in barbados through significant funding for early detection, scholarship support, research and the provision of medical equipment. the idea for a hospice was first proposed by baca at the january 2011 meeting of leaders of barbados organizations in the new york jurisdiction at the consulate general of barbados at new york. notably, it fitted in well with the call of the late prime minister david thompson for the barbados diaspora to engage in substantive development activities and initiatives to aid barbados. lwc is a catholic lay community in port of spain founded by rhonda maingot and rose jackman in 1975. the community has vibrant ministries targeting the poor, less, abused, dying, drug addicted and illiterate in trinidad and around the region. lwc has operated hospices in trinidad since 1983 and as such will bring over 30 years of expertise to the barbados hospice. lwc will be assisted by a pool of trained volunteers in the day to day operation of the hospice. construction of a state of the art “green” building is expected to start in 2016, with services to start in 2017. for further information, please contact: usa: o'neall e. parris, md, mph, faap president baca usa, inc. 410 lakeville road new hyde park, ny 11042 866|729|1011 ext. 101 this email address is being protected from spambots. you need javascript e
